Welcome to The Quail House Holiday Cottage and Shepherd's Hut at Coldwell Farm, Leominster, Herefordshire
We very are sorry but following Sarah's passing away in February 2022 we are not currently taking bookings.
Coldwell Farm is currently for sale so if you are interested in taking on a little piece of heaven in Herefordshire, please contact Peter for more details.
The Quail House is a delightful period cottage situated in the old fold yard at Coldwell Farm, a small Historic Farm recorded back to C12 and hidden in a fold of the glorious, gentle rolling hills of North Herefordshire. Built of stone and oak timbers, it is an ideal country retreat for a single person or couple wanting to enjoy the beauty and peace of the countryside.
In its own sheltered and private area set amongst quince and medlar trees, is our lovely Shepherd's Hut for a single person or two people sharing either as a couple or two singles. The Quail House and Shepherd's Hut can be booked together, sharing facilities of both. However, with its own washroom close by, the Shepherd's Hut can be rented independently; a 10% discount is offered when both Shepherd's Hut and Quail House are rented together.
Conveniently located only 2.5 miles from Leominster, Coldwell Farm is approached down a damson lined track and over our stone bridge crossing the Stretford Brook. The farm and its buildings are Grade II Listed and mostly over 300 years old but there is evidence of occupation here since even before the Romans came to Britain - The farm adjoins the site of a Roman Bath-House excavated at Stonechesters and close to a Roman settlement recorded at Blackwardine nearby.
Run on conservation principles with no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used on the land here for over 40 years, Coldwell Farm's ancient meadows, hedges, orcharding and stream banks are a haven for wildlife with the natural flora supporting a multitude of rare and declining species of insects, birds and animal life - including water vole and dormice. Look out for fast flying noctule bats travelling the lane at dusk in Summer and toads using the farm track as they migrate in their hundreds in Spring; hare, weasels and even a snowy owl grounded in a snow storm have been recorded here - an idyll for wildlife and naturalists alike, in all seasons.
For those wanting to explore the rich heritage of Herefordshire further afield, it's a great starting point for walking, cycling or exploring the 'Black and White Village Trail". Ludlow and Hereford are both about 12 miles away and we are about 20 miles from the border with Wales - not far from Offa's Dyke. There is plenty to see and do whatever the weather. Medieval castles, Iron Age forts ….and Old English Pubs are here in abundance.
++ For those interested in history, we have recently uncovered a Romano-British, possible water shrine - possible the corner of a villa (or temple) ...see the photos section ++

Our cosy Shepherds Hut sleeps two people in comfort with a raised double bed (with space below for a single if preferred). With its own wash-room close by, The Shepherd's Hut can be booked independently of the Quail House but if booked together we offer a 10% discount on the combined rate.
