The Quail House Cottage

A Grade II Listed Building, this is a delightful cottage converted from a former granary and later hop house, built of stone and oak timbers and set in the old fold yard / courtyard of Coldwell Farm. A small Historic Farm and Grange of Leominster's Benedictine Priory, and recorded back to the C12, most of the land is old pasture with some orcharding with old damson trees, traditional cider apple and perry pear varieties. The fields and hedgerows are abundant in animal and bird life which changes through the seasons. The brook is a delight in Spring and Summer - you may be lucky enough to get a glimpse of kingfishers, wagtails and dippers as they work the shallows of the brook. Sit awhile by the brook in the meadow behind the Quail House - water shrew, bank voles, harvest mice, water voles and dormice are present with a visiting family of otters busy in the brook all year. Enjoy the beauty - waterproof picnic mat and picnic basket are located in cupboard in lounge.

To protect wildlife, we do not allow fishing on our brook, but wonderful facilities exist nearby at Docklow Pools, the UK's oldest fishery. Please note, as a conservation farm, we deliberately leave areas of nettle, bramble and rosebay willow herb undisturbed; "weeds" are important host plants for many insects - the untidy borders behind Cow Byre and elsewhere are by design and not neglect! Lady's bedstraw, campion and scabious make the area behind the Quail House one of the most visited by bumble bees, moths and butterflies all Summer long. Listen out for grasshoppers and look out for the spectacular Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillars around the patio area along with the caterpillars of the Drinker Moth and Mullein Moth..just a few - lots to enjoy and photograph. There is a moth for every month of the year, so the show doesn't end with Summer - but continues throughout the year, including even a frosty cold January!
